This merry and bright compendium by the editors of Imbibe magazine would get any Scrooge excited for the holiday season. The 50 festive recipes, culled from cocktail experts and mixologists at some of the hippest bars in the country, include twists on the classics, such as Anejo Tequila and Amontillado Sherry Eggnog, as well as unique concoctions of unusual ingredients such as Becherovka, acquavit, and Chartreuse, alongside homemade syrups and infusions. There are punches and champagne cocktails that promise to get guests into a sparkling party spirit, and for more mellow winter evenings there are "seasonal sips" heavy on apples, clementines, cranberries, and spices. When the polar vortex really starts to bite, take comfort in a mug of spiked hot chocolate, classic Irish coffee, or hot buttered cider. Although several of the recipes require advanced planning, plenty are simple enough for a spontaneous yuletide toast. Colorful and elegant photographs by Lara Ferroni offer presentation inspiration, while handy blue flags at the corner of each recipe page list such details as serving size, garnish, tools, and glassware. Useful party-throwing tips are included, but the focus remains firmly on the drinks. VERDICT All a cocktail lover needs for the holiday season (but look elsewhere for virgin variations).--Joanna Scutts, Astoria, NY
